Nevada City - I Can't Wait to See You Again
Monday, June 16, 2008 - Race Reports
Big thanks to Michael Hernandez for giving the blog a shout out at Nevada City yesterday. We'll see if he did as well as Phil yelling "paulmach.com" all weekend at collegiate nationals. Either way, the pressure is on, luckily I eat pressure for 4th Meal, so I should be fine.

I'd never actually done the Nevada City Classic before so I was excited to see what all the excitement was about. Dan wouldn't shut up about how hard the course is. I must say it did live up to all the hype: epic climb, epic decent, and a bunch of pros to push the pace.

It was only Joe and I representing for the DB club. The race plan was simple: just hang on. Justin England and Scott Nydam went off the front early and I was not going to fool myself into thinking I could bring them back. I just followed moves the whole race. On the last lap I put in a dig up the hill, but it was nowhere near enough and I just ended up on the front at the start of the decent. I spun out my 12 to nip Tyler at the line for 7th place.

I don't have much else to say about the actual race except that those pros are very coordinated at shoving people into the hurt locker.

Overall, I'm pretty happy about my performance. I felt like I could hold my own against the big boys and was the top amateur. After the Exercise Induced Fatigue I caught Saturday, things turned out pretty good.

Post race, Hernando, the announcer, came over for a few words. I dropped the ball, but it's amazing just how well today's popular music captures how I feel about it:

The last time I freaked out, I just kept lookin' down
I st-st-stuttered when you asked me what I'm thinkin' 'bout
Felt like I couldn't breathe, you asked what's wrong with me
My best friend Sara said, "He's just being a dork."

Congrats to DB club Junior Chris Stastny who won the field sprint for second in the 3s.

PS. DB stands for Davis Bike, don't try to get creative with it.
